The Shakers and Photography

Initially forbidden, the Shakers embraced photography in the mid-nineteenth century to record their personal and communal lives - and likely viewed the early evolution of this developing technology/art form to be in parallel with their own spirit of innovation. This workshop will focus on Shaker portraiture from the early and formal studio portraits to the more intimate environmental portraits and group portraits that seem to deliver a message. You are also invited to bring along your favorite camera for an optional walk through the village to discuss and create your own environmental portrait.
