Join us for a personalized view of the Shaker world on this special ninety-minute tour to explore the Shakers' relationship to photography--especially portraiture--with artist John Mancia.

Initially forbidden, the Shakers embraced photography in the mid-nineteenth century to record their personal and communal lives - and likely viewed the early evolution of this developing technology/art form to be in parallel with their own spirit of innovation. This tour will focus on Shaker portraiture from the early and formal studio portraits to the more intimate environmental portraits and group portraits that seem to deliver a message. John invites participants to bring along a favorite camera to take their own photographs during the tour. He will also give participants an opportunity to take a portrait with his large format camera - with Hancock Shaker Village in the background. 

Pre-registration is required. Registration fee, which includes general admission to the Village, is $40/adults, $15/young people ages 6-17. 10% discount for HSV members. Not appropriate for children under 6.
