God Separated the Light from the Darkness: The Relationship of Light to Dark in Rabbinic Tradition.

In the Book of Genesis, the rabbinic sages noted that at the dawn of Creation, God created light (Genesis 1:3) but only later separated the light from the darkness (Genesis 1:4). In their imagination, light and darkness existed together during the first moments following Creation before God assigned the one to "day" and the other to "night". How could this be? How might it have influenced Shaker thought on light and darkness?
