Blacksmithing 101 (May 2020)

This event is no longer on sale.

Saturday May 16

10:00 AM  –  4:00 PM

At this TWO-DAY Workshop (Saturday & Sunday), learn basic blacksmithing skills by making several projects of their choice using traditional blacksmith's tools and techniques in a coal-fired forge.  Students begin by making several hooks to learn how to manage the forge fire, heat the stock, shape the steel with hammer and anvil, and finish.  Students may then move on to more advanced projects such as plant hangers, hearth or kitchen utensils, a candle sconce, or other project of their choice.  Join us for a fun and fast-paced weekend, no experience is required, only a desire to learn!  Note to students:  Wear long pants (jeans), non-synthetic clothing, closed-toed shoes; safety glasses; bring leather gloves (if you have them).

REGISTRATION FEE:  $150 ($135 for members)

MATERIALS FEE:  In addition to the registration fee, a $100 materials fee (cash only) is payable directly to the instructor.

Instructor:  John Boyd. John has been a blacksmith for over 25 years, crafting beautiful yet functional pieces for the home and garden. Based in Charlemont, Mass., John and his wife Deb own Country Things from the Stonehill Farm, a shop specializing in forged ironwork and fiber art as well as country giftware and vintage goods.
