Verse of Light: Resonances Between Islamic Art and the Shakers.

In a cultural climate obsessed with difference, can resonances between the sacred art of diverse religious traditions shed light on shared human experiences of spirituality, devotion and community? Visual artist Alyssa Sakina Mumtaz considers the devotional creativity of the Shakers from the view point of an American-born Muslim convert. With emphasis on the sacred symbolism of light, her presentation will draw from Islamic art and contemplative thought as well as from the testimony and practices of the Shakers.
